Love this, beautifully written - and I’m buying your premise Mike. Though having lived in Tokyo for a couple of years, the behavioural substrate is actually reinforced with a bit of old-fashioned social norm policing. For example, putting out the rubbish: put the wrong item in the wrong (transparent) bag and expect a neighborhood o-ba-chan to pop it back on your doorstep with a note. Japanese school 5.5 days a week seems to inculcate some strong uniform behaviours too. What might the analogue for agent ‘conditioning’ is a great question!
